Kharkiv's mayor, Ihor Terekhov, posted updates on social media app Telegram last night as the attack unfolded.

In the early hours, he said the city was experiencing the most powerful attack of the war so far, describing at one point how "at least 40 explosions" had been heard within an hour and a half.

Preliminary information indicates 18 apartment buildings and 13 other homes have been damaged, he says, describing the attack as "open terror".

As we've been reporting, the mayor says at least three people have been killed.

  3. Large-scale strikes follow Ukrainian drone attack on Russian basespublished at 07:05 British Summer Time 7 June

The overnight strikes on Kharkiv follow a large-scale Russian aerial attack across Ukraine the night before - which killed six people and injured 80.

Russia claimed military sites were targeted in the attack, which it says was in response to "terrorist acts by the Kyiv regime".

It came days after daring drone strikes from Ukraine, targeting Russian strategic warplanes at four military bases deep inside the country.

At least 40 Russian aircraft were struck during that operation - Operation Spider's Web - last Sunday, Ukraine's security service SBU said.

After that attack, US President Donald Trump said his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, had vowed to respond.
